Health Care is a serious matter involving life and death- literally and figuratively. Health Care involves the treatment, prevention and management of various health conditions by health professionals such as physicians, assistants, nurses, pharmacists, therapies, psychologists, pharmacists, dentists and many other people licensed to give health relief and care.

Choosing the qualified individuals that will take the executive positions in hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic laboratories, and medical device manufacturers requires deliberate and careful thought. Persons that will hold this job should be capable of handling great responsibilities and stress.

Executive searches or headhunting pertains to the endeavor involved in the recruitment of individuals to fill the top positions in a specific institution. It is classified as either retained executive search or contingency search. Retained health care executive search pertains involves the search for senior-level management positions like CEO, President, Directors or Managers. The contingency health care executive searches are for professional staff like the nurses, physicians, assistants and the like.

Executive searches can be conducted by the board of directors of that specific organization, the other executives or even by an outside executive search organization. Due to the difficulty of choosing the qualified individuals to fill the post, executive search health care is undertaken by the members of the board of directors, alongside an executive search firm. The executive search firm may be in charged with the initial application process which involves the pooling of possible candidates, while the board of the directors will then choose from the most highly qualified individuals screened by the executive firms to fill the bill. The institution will then pay the executive search firm after they have presented the possible candidates.

Health care executive search is a difficult and lucrative endeavor especially that the health care sector provides for 14 million jobs (as of 2006 survey). Around 19.6 percent of which are Medical and Health Mangers and 11.6 percent are top executives.
